Square Dance Clothing

As a life-long square dancer, I love the bright colors and swirling skirts of dance dresses! I can make many styles of skirts and dresses. My standard selection is below, but if you have seen something elsewhere that you like, I can often replicate it. I do not sell pre-made dresses, but can make any of the styles below with fabrics you purchase. I can guide you through the process of choosing appropriate fabrics.

Details and common questions

What is the process for creating my garments?

Please contact me via e-mail to begin the process. I will send you the shopping list for the garments you have chosen. Take this list to the fabric source of your choice. The staff should be able to help you find what you need. When you have purchased your materials, we will arrange delivery.  You can bring them to my studio,  they can be mailed to me, or we can arrange a time/place to meet if you are in the local area. I can often  be found at Lesson nights for County Line Squares in Monticello, or B&B Squares in Buffalo.  When your garments are ready, we will again make arrangements. If your garments must be mailed, you are responsible for postage.

What kind of payment do you accept?
I will accept cash or personal checks delivered with your fabric purchase. The website accepts Paypal, Venmo, G-Pay or Credit/Debit card payments. Personal checks will be deposited, and work will not begin until the check has cleared.

How do I make payment through this site?
The site is set up to schedule classes, not for purchases, so it's not a perfectly smooth process. I apologize, but it is what it is. On the menu above click on "classes" then on "square dance clothing". On that page, click on "read more"  for each garment you wish to order. You will have to "book" an appointment- just choose a random time, we won't actually keep that appointment. Then click "next".  On the following page click "continue browsing" if you also want to add other items, or "view cart" to go directly to the payment process. The payment process should be straightforward and familiar.  The Credit/Debit option is there, but you need to click on "check out" and  then "continue" at the bottom of the page to get to it.

Why only peasant blouses? Can you make other styles?
To be able to move freely and dance comfortably, a blouse either needs to be loose with room to move, or properly fitted through the back and sleeves. The peasant blouse is easy to size comfortably with no fitting needed. They can be made in any color you choose, and with decorative details added.

Do you make dresses, or just skirts?
I can attach a gathered skirt to one of my peasant blouses for no added charge, with one quick visit for a measurement. The dress will have an elastic waist and you will need a matching belt.

What length is the skirt?
Skirts are 22" in length unless otherwise requested. Petticoats usually range 18”-24”; if you already own a petticoat please request the skirt length for 1" longer than the petticoat.
Prairie style skirts are 30”.

Prairie Skirts

Though not pictured above, I can do prairie skirts. A prairie skirt is less full, does not use a petticoat, and the length is about mid-calf. They have 5 gathered tiers. For comparison, skirt G above is 3 gathered tiers. Cost of the prairie skirt is the same as skirt G.

What kind of waistband and closure is used for a skirt?
A gathered skirt can have either elastic or smooth waistband. A flared skirt will have a smooth waistband. A smooth waistband is closed with a hook, and includes a pocket that allows the skirt to open enough to fit over your hips.

Do you make petticoats?
No. They can be purchased from many dance supply sites.

Do you make petti pants?
No. I can make snug shorts from a stretch fabric which serve the same purpose without the lacy ruffles. Purchased "bike shorts" or "jazz pants" also work. Petti pants can be purchased from many dance supply sites.

Why do you add a yoke to purchased man's shirt instead of making shirts from scratch?
If a man is single, it's usually possible to find western style shirts in stores for less than the cost of a custom shirt. It only becomes necessary to have a custom shirt when it needs to match the partner's skirt, or if a hard-to-find size is needed. Purchased shirts can be taken in if needed for a more fitted look. Most people will find it more cost-effective to buy a shirt of the size and quality they desire and just have the yoke added to match the woman's skirt. Also, permanent-press shirts are much easier to find than permanent-press fabrics.
