Intro to Machine Sewing
Learn how to operate a sewing machine and basic sewing skills.
Service Description
For adults and teens 16+. We will meet 4 times, for 2hrs. For the student that has minimal or no experience with sewing machines. Skills covered includes: The parts of a machine, how to thread a machine and set it up for a project, basic tools, and beginner sewing skills such as straight and curved seams, corners, uses of zig-zag, seam allowance, pins and fusible adhesive, zipper application. Several small projects will be completed in class, but students will need to use out-of-class time to become proficient in the needed skills. Projects include a felt bookmarker, drawstring bag, zipper bag, and a pillowcase. Supplies: Most supplies will be provided. Fabric purchase requirements will be provided at first class. Machines: We will use mechanical (non-computerized) machines, some of which may be vintage. Students will rotate through the various machines to become familiar with the differences they might encounter elsewhere. A student is welcome to bring their own machine IF: *They are capable of carrying the machine up the stairs to the second floor. *It is not computerized, OR they are familiar with the programming and controls of their computerized machine. Every computerized machine has different programming; I cannot use class time to figure out one student's personal machine. All students need access to a machine at home to practice skills between classes.
